University Background
Shantou University, located in Shantou, Guangdong Province, China, is the only comprehensive university in the eastern region of the province with a population of over 20 million people. Founded in 1981 by the Chinese Government and Mr. Li Ka-Shing, Shantou University receives significant funding from the Li Ka-Shing Foundation. The Li Ka Shing Foundation has committed and donated a total of HK$5.4 billion to support Shantou University (including the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business), of which HK$4.2 billion has already been committed and donated as of 2011.
Shantou University currently has over 1,400 staff and over 9,000 students working towards Bachelors, Masters and PhD degrees in the Colleges and Schools of Arts and Design, Business, Engineering, Journalism and Communication, Law, Liberal Arts, Medicine, and Science.
Recognized as a leading reform university in China, Shantou University has been transforming into an internationalized university through education reform since 2001. The reform efforts encompass many areas of university life, such as academic governance; personnel, finance, and resource management; a credit system; an English enhancement program, curriculum reform; active and service learning paradigms; and a residential college system. More recently, the University has embarked on university-wide curriculum redesign and development of advanced undergraduate programs.
College of Liberal Arts Background
The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) is one of the nine main schools in Shantou University. With support from the University and the Li Ka-Shing Foundation, CLA has established several centers (the Institute of English Language and Literature, the Center for Overseas Examinations, the Center for Women Studies, the Center for International Studies (CIS), and the Center for Christian Studies) in addition to its primary academic departments. The College offers degree programs in Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Chinese Philology, Study of Literature and Arts, Chinese Ancient Literature, and English Language and Literature. The College frequently invites national and international scholars to campus to give lectures and speeches for students and arranges for undergraduates and post-graduates to participate in community service activities. Currently, the College is undertaking a series of curricular, student, and faculty development initiatives.
Department of Foreign languages and Literature
The Department of Foreign languages and Literature provides English instruction to about 300 English Major students for both undergraduate and graduate programs. The Department is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research work to create a supportive English language and culture learning environment in which students can develop their intercultural communication competence and integrative thinking strategies. The programs stress the importance of both curricular and extra-curricular activities, creating a vibrant and creative intellectual community.
Position Requirements
The Department of Foreign languages and Literature at College of Liberal Arts, Shantou University in China invites applications for positions as (Associate) Professor of Literature in English, of Translation Studies, and of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. Accepted applications will be employed starting from September 2012.
The candidate’s primary responsibility is to teach eight to ten hours a week (courses concerning English language skills, literature, and/or translation studies for undergraduates and/or graduates). Candidates are also expected to supervise six to eight graduating students (thesis) in each academic year, to advise students in extra-curricular activities such as speech contest, debating contest, writing contest, to aid local teacher’s academic work.
General Requirements:
Candidates should possess an earned Ph.D. in Literature in English, in Comparative Literature, in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, or in Translation Studies. Priority will be given to those who have a strong background in teaching and research. Preference will go to candidates with a strong capability to academic research.
Salaries and Benefits: A high competitive salary (12-month basis) commensurate with qualification and experience will be offered. Medical benefits and housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
