NST 1B Psychology practicals
are on Tuesdays/Wednesdays and Thursdays/Fridays. Each practical is run three times, because there are more students than will easily fit in the practical classroom for some practicals. The time slots are Tuesday 9-11 am, Wednesday 10-12 am and Wednesday 2-4 pm (in any given week, these are three copies of the same practical), and Thursday 2-4 pm, Friday 10-12 am and Friday 2-4 pm (again, in any given week, these are three copies of the same practical).
The following handouts are in PDF format. Click here to download Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free. Numbers in [square brackets] are internal reference numbers (T for teaching materials).
Graduate handouts (not for a particular year)
- Graduate statistics - Guide to ANOVA [T112]. Most recent version is of 2 May 2004. Superseded by Cardinal & Aitken (2005) ANOVA for the behavioural sciences researcher; see the statistics materials page.
2004-5
- Exp Psych 1B - Practical handout - Introduction to Neurobiology [T113] (Thu 7, Fri 8 October 2004) [slides] [T114]
- Exp Psych 1B - Statistics - course booklet [T115]. The booklet includes these sections:
- Overview
- Background knowledge - to be read before the first statistics practical
- Correlation and regression - for practical on Thu 11, Fri 12 November 2004 [with slides A [T116] and partial summary of mental rotation data [T117], though these data are for only one of the experiments and therefore not enough to write up the mental rotation practical - for that, you should obtain the full data set instead]. In this practical, as well as covering the theory, you will analyse your own data from Gregg DiGirolamo's mental rotation practical on Tue 9 and Wed 10 Nov.
- Difference tests 1 (parametric) - for practical on Tue 30 November, Wed 1 December 2004 [with slides B [T118] and summary of psycholinguistics data [T119]]. In this practical, as well as covering the theory, you will analyse your own data from the psycholinguistics practical on Thu 25 and Fri 26 Nov.
- Difference tests 2 (nonparametric) - for practical on Thu 10, Fri 11 February 2005 [with slides C [T120]]. In this practical, as well as covering the theory, you will analyse your own data from Ian McLaren's human learning/memory practicals between Tue 1 and Wed 9 Feb.
- Chi-square test - for practical on Tue 1, Wed 2 March 2005 [with slides D [T121]]. In this practical, as well as covering the theory, you will analyse your own data from Lisa Saksida's reasoning practical on Thu 24 and Fri 25 Feb.
- Example questions for all sections.
- Past exam questions - to be discussed in the revision practical on Tue 3, Wed 4 May 2005 [slides E] [T122].
- Answers to examples and numerical past exam questions.
- Experimental design tips and glossary of jargon.
- Tables and Formulae, as supplied in the exam.
